John Oswald presents plunderphoniCoveralls with special guests Poets’ Workout Sound System

Friday Sept 12th,  8:00 PM,  $20.

Best known as the the creator of the music genre plunderphonics – John Oswald is one of Canada’s most internationally renowned composers and arguably it’s most infamous. A long list of collaborative partners include The Grateful Dead, John Zorn, Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser, Kronos Quartet, Marc-Andre Hamelin, Ensemble Modern, Bang On A Can All-Stars, Bill T. Jones and countless others.

In 2004, upon bestowing him with Canada’s most prestigious art award, the Governor General’s Award jury stated : “John Oswald has created an art – and vocabulary – of his own in his exceptional and innovative work as a sound artist, image alchemist, composer and media artist… Oswald’s art, while often playful, is a serious examination of basic elements. His influence on an entire generation of artists and his international reputation attest to his free-ranging spirit of innovation and exploration.”

For his debut performance at Hotel Wolfe Island, Oswald has assembled a cast of musicians to work through his newest concept – plunderphoniCoveralls – a set of “reverse karaoke” improvisations to a selection of a cappella recordings from the last 75 years in popular music. Featured singers include Joni Mitchell, Luciano Pavarotti, Billies Holiday & Eilish, Willie Nelson, Celine Dion, Barry White & more.

Chris Brown – organ, keys
Jason Mercer – bass
Sandro Perri – guitar, synth
Andrew Whiteman – organelle

more guests TBA + special virtual appearance by Bill Frisell – electric guitar

Poets’ Workout Sound System

“Hailing from Montreal and Toronto, Poets’ Workout Sound System is Andrew Whiteman (Apostle Of Hustle, Broken Social Scene) and Adrienne Amato – two longtime friends pushing each other’s buttons onstage under the sign of high NRG beats, psychedelic visuals, and radical liberatory poetics. Modelled after the neo-pull-up-your-sox wierdness of the Jane Fonda 1980s, P.W.S.S. offers Poetry, dressed in fresh track suits and accompanied by fast BPM tempos as a possible mode of resistance to capitalism. They seek to engage the excitement and free movement of bodies together, tapping into a collective image of Keith Haring cartoons come alive. Do your thing! Focus your vibe! If you love the sound of the Roland 909, the satire of MF Doom, and the full mental release of a call to action that says “You Aren’t Alone!”, check ça si vous plait.”
