Carlo Muscat
From Kyiv, Ukraine, Carlo Muscat is recognised as one of the most promising voices on the European jazz scene, establishing himself as a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, culminating in the release of eight albums under his name. His sixth album, Hymns, received critical acclaim, earning a four-star rating from Downbeat Magazine and a place on their Best Albums of 2023 list.
Born and raised in Malta, Muscat has been based in Kyiv since January 2022, where he has remained an active and steadfast figure in the city’s music community throughout the ongoing conflict.
His most recent album, “That’s About It”, is a collection of original compositions recorded in Kyiv under wartime conditions. On his eighth release as a leader, saxophonist Carlo Muscat brings together an ensemble of Ukrainian musicians to present a repertoire focused largely on ballads, with an emphasis on lyricism, space, and measured interaction. The recording took place in the capital during a period of air-raid sirens, curfews, and intermittent power outages, with the performances recorded live under these conditions. The pieces are structured with melodic economy and harmonic detail, allowing space for dialogue and restrained improvisational exchange, with a repertoire that draws on the ballad tradition within a contemporary framework.
On Friday May 15th, he will joined by Luis Deniz (alto saxophone), Diogo Peixoto (guitar), Marika Galea (bass), and Eric Platz (drums), to present the music from his most recent release.
Tickets are $20 or PWYC at the door.
