About the Exhibit

These three artists have created an intriguing space within Hotel Wolfe Island that balances their different styles and mediums. The effect is a visual and textural feast that invites the viewer to take some time to appreciate the commonalities and contrasts between prints, pots and threads.

Angela Costello – Artist’s Statement

I am a printmaker who creates limited-edition original silkscreen prints. Inspired by my fascination with animals and environments, both domestic and wild, I compose my images on paper with ink, applied colour by colour, layer on layer using photo stencil-silkscreen printing techniques. My most recent prints are expressions of my enduring interest in feline movement and attitude. I have combined quirky colours, bold lines and unusual textures to make compositions of graceful, daring and comical cats dancing in a tangle of dynamic lines. In tandem with my feline projects, I collect, through photography, elements from the forest and compose these splendid patterns, textures, values and lines into abstract black and white collages. These images I developed through collage have informed my next series of prints through which I will explore how colour alters meaning and mood. My practice as a printmaker spans over 35 years and I have enjoyed being a part of the Kingston arts community as an artist, arts educator and exhibition manager.

Sue Lyon – Artist’s Statement

I found my love of clay in West Yorkshire, UK. In 1990 we emigrated to Kingston, Canada, where I joined the Potters’ Guild (President 1996-1999).

I have exhibited in galleries in Ontario and Vancouver, also in Kingston at the Women’s Art Festival, Potters’ Guild, many studio tours since 1993, and an Autumn Art Exhibition. I participate annually in OKWA shows (President in 2016-2018).

Over the years I have made dinner sets, supplies for restaurants and my pots have been shipped to other continents.

In my purpose-built studio, I teach and create both functional and sculptural pieces. Teaching has given me the joy of seeing several students become professional potters.

Phillida Hargreaves – Artist’s Statement

As a fiber artist, I use the textural qualities of fabric and yarn to create a visceral and tactile connection to the world around me.

I use recycled and commercial cloth which I alter with dye, rust, paint and print. I build my pieces layer by layer and add extra dimensions with sheers, yarn and thread. I prefer to work in series, and have covered many subjects including Canadian landscapes, trees, buildings, and rocks. Currently I am focusing on moss and fungi. This show contains art from each series.

I have created fiber art for over 30 years. My pieces have been shown across Canada and internationally. Now I show primarily in eastern Ontario.

I am privileged to be a member of the Kingston Fiber Artists and the Organization of Kingston Women Artists.
